As a consultant, I help a lot of people build their own businesses. I'd like to also use this space to share some simple tips to help you get started.
Starting a business really isn’t as hard or as expensive as you think it is. It’s really a piece of cake. There are so many great resources out there that will allow you to start out for little to nothing and build as you grow. I’m going to share a few great resources here that can help you look professional without putting yourself in debt. Some of these links are affiliate links but I promise to only share with you things that I've used myself. The Shopify link also grants me the ability to work on your shop if you might need some help, as I am a Certified Shopify Partner.
This will just be a quick rundown as I plan to go into depth on each one of these at a later point in time. Please feel free to leave any comments or questions you might have.
First and foremost get yourself an email address. I would advise getting one for your business needs and accounts, and one for customer contact. This helps protect you from getting your accounts hijacked and to weed out spam and scams easier. Never make the email address you use for your business accounts public. Now if you don’t want to have to log in to both you can forward one to the other. But trust me it’s worth it.
Tumblr is a great place to create a website absolutely free of charge. You really can create a professional-looking site without dropping a dime. No joke. My first site was here on Tumblr. It's a bit bare, but I leave it up to show an example of what can be created for free.
Mail Chimp is a great resource to start building an email list. You can start out free and they won’t charge you until you’ve reached a certain limit. Even if you’re not ready to start emailing, I’d advise you to start collecting.
If you’re looking to start selling items and need a storefront I have a couple of options I recommend. If you’re looking to sell handmade or vintage items Etsy is a great starting point. If you use my link here by clicking on Etsy you will get 40 free listings to begin selling. The second option I would give you is Shopify. Follow that link and you'll get a 14-day free trial. If you'd like me to create your store, you do not have to pay a subscription until we reach completion. I often hear “Shopify is too expensive.” But really it has tiers, and you don’t have to start with the most expensive plan. They have a $10 plan that is more than enough to begin with. If you want to check out a fully hosted shop on the $30 plan check out my shop usint the navagation at the top of any page. It's where you're reading this blog now.
Now when it comes to keeping everything organized I recommend Trello. Trust me I have tried a lot of methods but this is by far the best for me. You can set it up to fit any number of needs. I even use it for my personal life as well. It is a major lifesaver.
Again, if you have any questions or comments feel free to leave them. Thanks for reading!
